Sculpture in the Courtyard Celebration
We are excited to let you know about the installation of our new teapot sculpture in the courtyard celebrating the porcelain heritage of the area surrounding the Museum, and highlighting some of the ceramic treasures found within it.
Please Save the Date for our all-ages FREE Celebration Event on Saturday 16 September 11am-3pm, in our shared Courtyard with Royal Porcelain Works and at Henry Sandon Hall.
There will be all sorts of free creative activities to enjoy, as well as an opportunity to meet the artists and tea-tasting. There will also be talks by Oral Historian Julia Letts, sharing some of her interviews with former Royal Worcester factory workers. Local historian and author, Colin Millett, will also be joining us, signing copies of his new book on Harry Davies.
Museum Director, Sophie Heath, explains:
“The sculpture has been made possible thanks to support from The Kildare Trust and Bransford Trust. Artists Julie Edwards and Ron Thompson of Planet Art were commissioned to create the sculpture and local schools, community groups, businesses and residents took part in design workshops to develop ideas. We are thrilled with the result and look forward to unveiling it at this special celebration event.”
Event attendees will also be able to find out about a new £75k public art commission for the former factory site funded by developer contributions as part of its regeneration. This will celebrate the porcelain heritage of the site through heritage interpretation boards linked to former worker oral histories and a site-specific artwork. The artist brief was open for applications until Monday 31st July 12pm and is being managed as a partnership project between Worcester City Council, Royal Porcelain Works, the Museum of Royal Worcester and local residents.
We are currently reviewing over 50 applicants and are enthused by the creativity our city offers. Watch this space for more details or visit us on the 16 September to find out who the chosen artist is.
