A marble bust by Raphael Monti, one of the most popular Victorian sculptors, inspired Hadley to design a series of similar busts in the 1860s. This example is modelled in Parian and decorated in ‘Raphaelesque’ colours with gold. The delicate effect of the black lace half-veil demonstrates Hadley’s exceptional skill.
